Obama Claim: "When a child doesn't have health insurance, he doesn't need a lecture, he needs health insurance."

Obama Health Care Facts:
If Barack Obama had his way, health care would be rationed, patients would lose the ability to choose their own doctors, and costs would soar. Earlier this year, Obama sponsored the Health Care Justice Act, which would have created a government-run health care system. When a rival political campaign pointed out its $2.6-$4 billion cost (at a time when the state was struggling to cover a $3 billion annual deficit) and its other deficiencies, Obama offered an amendment to gut his own bill.

Now Obama says he wants to use "free market principles" to deliver health care.

Meanwhile, Obama has won the endorsement of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, based largely on his consistent opposition to true medical malpractice reform - opposition which puts money in the pockets of trial lawyers, even as it drives insurance costs (and, thereby, health insurance costs) through the roof. The result: more and more doctors practice defensive medicine to protect themselves in the event of a lawsuit, even as more and more doctors refuse to take high-risk patients or leave the state altogether.

SB 1430 (2004) Health Care Justice Act
Provides that it is the policy of the state of Illinois to ensure that all residents have access to quality health care at costs that are affordable, and provides that the state is required to implement a health care access plan to address preventive, acute, and long-term health care needs.

SB 649 (2000): Voted No, Human Cloning Ban (Feb. 24, 2000)
Prohibits human cloning. Allows for certain exceptions for biomedical research.

SJRCA 22 (2003): Sponsor, Universal Health Care Constitutional Amendment
Proposes to amend the Bill of Rights Article of the Illinois Constitution to provide that the State shall enact on or before May 31, 2006 a plan for universal health care coverage for all persons. Effective upon being declared adopted.
