October 24, 2004 Keyes' views are clear if you listen Commentary
There is only one thing worse than someone who doesn't vote and that is someone who votes uninformed about the candidates. How do we get this information? Usually from our newspaper, TV, political mailings, and arguments with our friends and families. The newspaper has let me down on the Illinois Senate race. I've heard so must about Barack Obama that you would think he was the only one running to represent Illinois. Actually, I guess he was the only one for a while. However, there is now a Republican candidate named Alan Keyes, but you'd have to go somewhere other than The Journal Standard to get any information about him, other than his opinions about abortion and homosexual marriage. For me, that's a good start because I'm pro-life, but I wanted to know about other issues, so I went to hear him when he spoke in Rockford. He spoke about many things, not just homosexual marriage and abortion, as the media reports. Mr. Keyes believes in 2nd Amendment freedoms and the right of individuals to protect their families and property. He thinks that children should be protected from pornography. He supports tax relief, an end to the death tax, and the elimination of the federal income tax. Illinois is in a crisis regarding health care and tort reform is one of the solutions to this problem. Mr. Keyes is a proponent of tort reform. He also supports giving parents and communities the power to ensure that their children receive a quality education even if this results in removing their children from the public schools and sending them to a private school, with the help of vouchers. I may not agree with all of Mr. Keyes' solutions to the issues but I at least know about them. He is very intelligent, an impressive and articulate speaker and he certainly would add some excitement to the United States Senate. Alan Keyes would be a wonderful senator from Illinois. Hopefully, you'll give some thought to him as an alternative to his opponent. By the way, do you know exactly what he stands for?
