We must keep sowing seeds -- they'll need time to grow

David H. Braun
November 4, 2004

To my fellow Alan Keyes supporters, (with words for Alan also)

Thanks for fighting hard to the finish in the Illinois Senate race. In this we joined as co-laborers with Dr. Keyes. Alan irrevocably altered the course of the rest of his life when he left Maryland, the state of his heritage, to do battle in Illinois under the worst of conditions and against scary odds. Cynics -- and people who knowingly lied -- claimed Alan was an opportunist who was cavalierly abandoning Maryland and would just as cavalierly abandon Illinois. It was obvious from the outset to anyone who gave it any thought -- most painfully to Alan and his family -- that there would be no doorway back to his ancestral home in Maryland. Win or lose, Illinois would be Alan's home.

Thank you, Alan, for making that difficult decision. Thank you for giving us every ounce of the fight you promised in your declaration of candidacy. Most of all, thank you for being uncompromisingly faithful to God and conscience. It is your tested and proven integrity that gives you the credibility to lead the fight to rebuild the integrity of the corrupt and broken Republican party of Illinois. All who have and want integrity will welcome you.

A reminder to all: It is only one battle, one Senate race, that is over. This war has just begun!

Naturally, we all need some time to rest and reorient ourselves to the present circumstances. It is wise for us not to rush forward without rest or sense of direction. But, let us not disband and go our separate ways. Rather, let us use this time to regenerate, and to call up within ourselves the motivations and the strategies necessary to advance with clear and effective purpose. Each of us must fulfill our own vital role. This role cannot be entirely defined by central strategists, but must be defined largely by personal insight, motivation, initiative, and work. Among the most important things any of us can do is to build one another up, and build channels of communication. The fire in each of us will fuel the fire in all of us, and will burn far, far beyond us -- if we stay connected.

Having used the fiery language of war, it is necessary to temper that with the stabilizing language of agriculture. We cannot afford to burn ourselves out with impatience and an intensity that cannot be maintained. We need to keep sowing seeds -- here a little, there a little, as opportunities arise. It will take time for our seeds to sprout and grow roots. It will take longer still for sapling trees to become prominent to the eye -- longer still for the trees to grow tall and strong -- and longer still for a harvest of fruit. This means that, like any farmer, we need to patiently engage in actions that will lead to an eventual, bountiful harvest. If we maintain this perspective, we will not grow weary or discouraged.

As we plant our seeds and build our networks, we need to remember that there are powerful and hostile forces that are, even now, strategizing how they can stop us. These are not a single group but diverse groups that want us to fail, that want to drive Alan Keyes from Illinois and into obscurity, that want to squelch the voicing of the issues and arguments for which he and we stand. We must be wary of the ruthless and shameless tactics that will be used against us. Like a newly sprouted oak tree, we don't yet have the manifest strength that is in our genes, but are currently as vulnerable as a blade of grass. Our best defense is diligent work, sober thought, and complete integrity in all our speech and conduct. Growing well is more important than growing fast. That means focusing on winning many individual hearts throughout the state, rather than political power. If we aren't reckless, we can build strength in our network of friends long before our enemies realize the gravity of the threat we pose.

We need some rest. We need regeneration. But, there is still much to be done.

Keep fighting.

P.S. -- Even though the Senate race is over, the short video clips of Alan in debate are still a great way to communicate the strength of Alan's arguments and the bold (not mean) spirit in which he makes them.
